Allergies

Allergies and TMD affect the same general areas and both conditions have similar symptoms including facial pain, earaches, headaches and dizziness. Research shows allergies can sometimes exacerbate TMD pain. Violent or constant sneezing can cause the jaw to pop out of place or dislocate. Sinus congestion can cause swelling in the face and limit breathing to the mouth, which can cause jaw soreness or misalignment.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a common condition that is characterized by cessations in a person’s breathing as they sleep. A misaligned bite can cause the tongue to fall back, blocking the airways and affecting proper breathing. Research shows people with TMJ are more likely to develop sleep apnea, just as sleep apnea can cause or worsen TMD pain.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Recent studies have shown that irritable bowel syndrome and TMD pain can overlap, as both can be caused by bad posture. Poor posture can cause the lower jaw to protrude forward, creating a bad bite and TMJ-related pain. Your posture also has an effect on your stomach and intestines. Not standing or sitting up straight causes your gastrointestinal system to tense up or function poorly. Standing up straight can help ease bloating and gas as well as tension on the neck and jaw.
